The Studio of Jon Krawczyk
Down a long stairway, through a maze of power cords, welding tools and sculptures, we met Jon at the door to his Malibu studio. Upon entering his space we were greeted by his numerous dogs and the smell of grease, dust and the faint scent of burning metal.Excited for what was in store for us inside we wasted no time getting the tour started! As we approached the massive forms in the center of the room Jon explained that they were a new series of sculptures based on a recent commission he just finished. The original idea was taken from scrap pieces of wood that he found in his studio. Each side having a unique shape and endless possibilities. By discovering that the wood pieces could stand on their own, Jon envisioned them being supersized and started working out the details. With the new idea in his head he either grabs his sketchbook and starts using smaller models to work out his idea and potential challenges before he moves to using bigger, more expensive material. Here you can see a number of the models he is using to create his 5-8 foot tall sculptures for one of the galleries in Santa Monica that houses his work. As we continue our tour with Jon and discuss more about his process with these forms, his long time assistant, Anthony, continues to work in the background. Using a plasma cutter, he's creating the specific individual shapes of every side of the sculpture out of panels of sheetmetal. After a lot of welding, painting and polishing, the end result becomes life-size versions covered in reflective surfaces and neon paint.Jon usually takes his inspiration from everyday objects and things, such as smoke, ribbons, mirrors and ice cubes. You can see more of his past work and the sculptures in different galleries, here on his website.
